Auto Repair Safety Tips

It is an absolute advantage if you know a bit or more about auto repair because it can save you a great deal of money. However, bear in mind repairing your car in your own garage is a dirty and dangerous task so you need to take extra precautions when doing it.

Here are some auto repair safety tips to help you avoid the dangers of car repair:

  • Never attempt to repair something that is beyond your ability. If you are not sure on what you are going to do, don not take a risk. Consult a mechanic and car professional to do the job.
  • You need to know your physical limitations. Work only if you are physically fit and in good condition.
  • Do not smoke when you’re working in any fuel related components like fuel filter, fuel injectors, fuel pump and others.
  • Always have a fire extinguisher near the working area. It should have a B (liquids & grease fires) and C (electrical fires) rating.
  • Use a pair of support stands positioned underneath the vehicle to keep it from falling on you. Do not trust the jack alone to hold the vehicle up.
  • When doing electrical repair works, disconnect one of the battery cables or remove power fuses for a circuit.
  • During a car repair job, do not wear loose clothing and accessories like necklace, ring and jewelries. Tie your hair or cover it if it is long. These items may become entangled in pulleys or moving parts causing serious injury, dismemberment or death.
  • Be aware of the moving parts and hot stuff.
  • When the engine is running, do not disconnect or unplug any electrical connector because it can create a voltage spike that can damage sensitive electronic components..
  • While working, keep small children and pets away or anything that can cause you distractions.
